Matt Griffin – Chief Asset Officer
Matt is the President of Taproot Properties LLC and calls Tulsa his home. His career began in the Oklahoma oil patch after graduating with a BS in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa. After 10 years as a reservoir engineer with Vintage Petroleum and Newfield Exploration, Matt was a founding partner in establishing Protege Energy, an independent oil and gas production company. Protege Energy I was funded in 2004 with $30 million from financial partner EnCap Investments and followed an acquire and exploit model to make strategic acquisitions in Oklahoma resources plays. After a successful exit in 2008, the same team formed Protégé Energy II and was immediately funded with $100 million from EnCap. The company successfully pursued a lease and drill strategy acquiring over 20,000 acres in the shale‐rich area of southeast Ohio.
As Vice President of Acquisitions, Matt was responsible for identifying strategic opportunities, evaluating the economic potential, securing the assets and executing the plan to enhance value through the drill bit. In 2008 and 2012, Matt led the efforts to market and divest the assets to companies that included one of the largest energy companies in the world ultimately delivering well over a 2:1 return on investment to Protege’s investors and stakeholders.
In 2015, after 20+ years in the oil and gas industry, Matt established Taproot Properties to apply his skills at identifying asset opportunities, managing acquisitions and exploiting economic potential in the real estate domain instead of energy.
